Visiting Fremantle

Brand new WordPress theme with unlimited power and customization possibilities

Where the Swan River meets the Indian Ocean, Fremantle has been an integral part of Perth as a harbour town dating back to the original British Colonial settlement in 1829. With over 300 heritage listed buildings in the town cente a trip to Fremantle feels like a trip back in time. Ask a local what city they live in and they won’t tell you they are from Perth, they will tell you they are from Fremantle. The locals take great pride and treasure the towns past and it is easy to fall in love with it’s laid back vibe and bohemian charm. Famously home to Bon Scott (the original leader singer of AC/DC), current day Fremantle has become a melting pot for artists, commernce and wharfies alike and it is this fascinating blend that makes the city such an interesting place to visit.

Visiting Fremantle from Perth

Visit By Train

If you are staying in Perth the quickest and easiest way to get to Fremantle is by train. Trains depart Perth Underground Station to Fremantle around every 15 minutes and the journey is just over 30 minutes. Take the Fremantle line and it is the last stop on the line (so you don’t have to worry about getting off at the right station). You will need to buy a 2 zone ticket and each ticket expires after 2 hours (so you will need to buy another ticket for the return journey). Tickets must be purchased at the train station on the day of your journey. Visit By Boat

Cruising down stream from Perth to Fremantle is a really great way to visit the harbour town and certainly something I would reommend doing. The journey is $30 AUD one way ($40 return) and is a picturesque 75 minutes journey each way. My only advice is that you won’t want to go by boat if the weather is bad. The cruises tend not to sell out however so you can plan to book this just a few days prior once you know the weather is good. Captain Cook Cruises has cruises departing from Perth (Elizabeth Quay) at 9.30am, 11.15am & 2pm and returning to to Perth at 11am, 12.45pm & 3.45pm. There is plenty to do in Fremantle and if you don’t want your time to be cut short I would suggest getting a one way cruise from Perth to Fremantle and then take the train back to Perth (trains run until midnight).

Visit By Car

Parking in Fremantle has always been a hassle for me and as a vistitor it probaby isn’t going to be any easier. The drive is about 30 minutes (without traffic) and street parking is minimum so you will want to find a parking lot. Either way there will certainly be fees involved. I would head directly for King’s Square Car Park – it’s the largest car park in Fremantle, it’s undercover (multistory) and it’s right in the heart of the action. Check out the location and current rates below. Otherwise you can order a taxi, Uber or Ola for around $40 AUD one way.
